Comercialización desde 1863; presente en España a lo largo del siglo XX
Bénédictine es un licor de hierbas francés cuya receta actual fue desarrollada en 1863 por el comerciante Alexandre Le Grand en Fécamp, Normandía, quien la atribuyó al monje benedictino Dom Bernardo Vincelli (1510) para dotar a la marca de un aura monástica y medievalizante. Le Grand registró la marca en 1864, incorporando en la etiqueta las siglas D.O.M. (Deo Optimo Maximo, lema de la orden benedictina), y construyó en 1882 una espectacular destilería neogótica en el mismo solar de la antigua abadía. Pionero de la publicidad moderna, Le Grand encargó carteles artísticos a ilustradores de renombre —entre ellos Leonetto Cappiello y Alphonse Mucha— y los colocó en puntos estratégicos de paso de viajeros en toda Europa, incluyendo el mercado español donde el licor circulaba a través de importadores especializados. En 1986 la marca fue adquirida por Martini & Rossi y en 1992 pasó a Bacardi; a principios del siglo XXI exportaba en torno al 75 % de su producción a mercados de todo el mundo.
